Description: Hortus Hotel Amsterdam is a typical budget hotel for backpackers recommended by numerous travel guidebooks. It is centrally located in the historic Plantage neighborhood, a green and vibrant area of Amsterdam with a strong Jewish past. Hortus Hotel Amsterdam is directly next to the Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world from which the hotel derives its name. It is also only a few minutes’ walk from Waterlooplein and Rembrandtplein and within fifteen minutes from the Dam Square.
For more than twenty years, Hortus Hotel Amsterdam has existed under the same management who have consistently maintained the same style and atmosphere. The only recent change is the division of the legendary room 0 into four double rooms with private shower inside. The rooms are simple and smoker-friendly, some with a private shower in the room and some with a shared shower in the corridor. None of the rooms have a private toilet. There is a large common area with a flat screen TV, free pool table, and 24-hour reception. Connected to the common area is a fully-equipped communal kitchen with free coffee, tea, and instant soup. Formerly serving mainly backpackers, Hortus Hotel Amsterdam now has a more varied clientele, welcoming groups, families, and independent travelers.

The original name of the Hortus Hotel Amsterdam, was Hortus Hotel Pension Amsterdam. The meaning of the term pension varies from country to country. Here it meant that the Hortus Hotel Amsterdam had a contract with the government and was on a list to provide meals and long term accommodation at a discounted rate for people who, instead of serving a mandatory term in the army, would be put to work by the government. They could pick and choose hotels from the list that were located throughout the city. Years ago, the current owner’s mother would come in specially to prepare lunch and dinner for workers staying in rooms reserved for them, by the government on the third floor of the building.

Hortus Hotel Amsterdam offers clean, budget accommodation for up to 6 people and is located around the corner from the Artis Zoo, across the street from the Botanical Gardens. After exploring the city center you can relax in the hotel lounge, where the pool table, along with breakfast, coffee and tea are free all day. The rooms have a TV, a safe, free Wi-Fi and bed linen. Towels are available from reception upon request. You will have 24hr access to the hotel and your room, so coming back late isn't a problem. You can walk to The Hermitage Museum, Waterloo Square and the Red Light District, all within 10 minutes. The Metro and Tram are around the corner from the hotel for easy access to other areas.
